When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?
Psalm 8:3-4, NKJV
The Reality of Wonder
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?
Psalm 8:3-4, NKJV
Grit. Grace. Wonder.
If you’ve spent any amount of time on this site or are familiar with any of my work, you’ll eventually encounter me talking about how I want to live a life of wonder, but honestly? I’m not even entirely sure what that means.
A life of grit? I’m familiar with that — that’s just humanity in general, with some lives much grittier than others.
A life of grace? Thank God I have discovered His grace! It makes all the grit much much bearable.
A life of wonder? What does that look like exactly? What is it like to live daily in awe? It’s a concept I am familiar with in my head, but it hasn’t yet become embedded in my heart, so that it is in my creed and my bones, in the very way I breathe and live and move and have my being.
In fact, I often forget. I get so caught up by life in general that I forget to stop and allow myself to be overcome by wonder. I can’t remember when I stopped and marveled at the vastness of God and His creation, into all the unknowns of the universe, and filled my heart with gratitude that my Father in heaven still cares to know my name.
A Shift in Focus
How easily we forget! How quickly we get distracted by all the cares of this life, of this world. We are often too swept away, but really… all it takes is one moment. A moment where our eyes shift from everything around us to Him, to allow ourselves to be humbled by our smallness and His greatness, not so that we can struggle with any form of insecurity or inadequacy, but to shift our gaze toward something — Someone — greater.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. – C.S. Lewis
We realize that our lives aren’t about us, and that’s good, yet somehow… In all His wonder and greatness, He is mindful of us. He cares to visit us, to allow us to live with His presence, holding on to His promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
Now, if living with the Wonder of wonders isn’t something to strike us with wonder, I don’t know what will.
Living Wonder-Full
This is the first post in a series of exploring what it means to live with the God of wonders. I yearn to fill my days with wonder. I pray to live a life that is Wonder-Full.
